Saas Fe a top tip for November snow

Now that October is upon us, the Alpine ski season is getting underway. The highest resorts like Tignes and Chamonix are open for business as snowsport lovers take to the glaciers, with the certainty that they will soon be able to hit the lower slopes as well.

As winter nears everywhere, mountain snow will become increasingly prevalent everywhere. Many people who are used to making their ski hire bookings later in the season may wonder what the best early season options are.

Tignes set for eventful season

It's official: The winter snow season is underway in Tignes. And for those making their ski hire and snowboard hire arrangements, that means there is tonnes to look forward to.

Of course, nothing matters more than the slopes, and with glacier skiing back underway higher up and the lower slopes set to come into their own as the season progresses, the fun is only going to increase.

Both on the slopes and off, the arrival of ever more wintry weather is the cue for a wide array of events over the coming months.

Chamonix joins the Mountain Collective

Few, if any, would ever suggest that Chamonix is anything other than one of the leading ski resorts in the world - and a new development has added emphasis to its elite status.

The Mountain Collective, a network of top mountain ski resort that offer a co-operative discount pass, has announced that Chamonix has joined them.

It means that for US$399, skiers and boarders can enjoy two days of free access at each of 14 ski destinations around the world. In addition, there is a 50 per cent discount on lift passes for any further days spent at any of the North American resorts. Other benefits include special lodging deals, no blackout dates and ski pass insurance.

Cervinia is just the Italian job for October skiing

September can be a slightly awkward time for those who want to book some ski hire. Many of the resorts offering summer glacier skiing have shut for a period, ready to re-open when the snow appears on the lower slopes. Others simply await the start of their own shorter seasons.

Of course, there are places like Zermatt and Saas Fee that will have remained open, while Tignes does not stay closed for long. It should now be open again.

Nonetheless, for those seeking lots of choice, there will inevitably be more places to go as the season progresses, and if you fancy Italy, Cervinia is just the job next month.

Where the snow is falling

With autumn upon us down in the valleys, the snows are starting to fall on the Alps as winter approaches. If ever there was a time to make some ski and snowboard hire bookings, it is now.

Indeed, On The Snow has published the latest reports of snowfall this week. Much of it has fallen on the already pristine white glaciers on which many folk have been skiing during the summer, but the fact that it is on the way may be a good sign of things to come, particularly with an El Nino winter expected.
