Part of the Rhone-Alpes region, it's a small resort that has just four chairlifts, 15 slopes and space for 2,500 people. As a result of its size it isn't usually frequented by those who are looking for the apres-ski party lifestyle, which makes it perfect if you have small children and want to enjoy a quiet holiday with them. Similarly, it can make for an excellent long weekend getaway for couples as the resort has been purposely groomed to be peaceful. Don't worry about it being an unexciting place though, as it's actually very famous for its off-piste skiing and snowboarding.
Late season skiing in Zermatt
All you have to do is look, and even then you don't have to search very far, as Zermatt is one of the best places for snowsports thanks to its Theodul Glacier. This covers an area of 25km (16 miles) and the resort is so certain of its snowsure capabilities that it's open from May to mid-November. You can access it by the Klein Matterhorn cable car and the area is also shared with Cervinia in Italy, so you can enjoy some cross-border skiing during your holiday.
La Plagne, les regions differents
Favoured by many, it's the top pick from On The Snow, as it splits into separate villages, which makes for a nice and diverse vacation. There are ten places in total that are set between 1,250 metres and 2,000 metres, but the most popular are Belle Plagne and Plagne, which sit at 2,050 metres and 1,800 metres respectively. In general, the whole region's ski area is well known for being incredibly snowsure, which means that you can expect a guaranteed set of good weather for your entire trip.
Go car-free in Avoriaz
For this reason, you'll find that it's a bit hit with families, particularly those with small children, as it's very safe thanks to the lack of cars. The resort is also home to ski-in/ski-out lodgings, meaning that you can travel from front door to piste without ever having to take off your skis. This is very handy when you're travelling in a big group with little children because it means that you don't have to fuss with getting them in and out of their equipment. Similarly, you won't have to carry around extra ski poles from place to place, as you can just swoosh your way back to your lodgings.
Head to the dizzying heights of Val d'Isere
Why is it so popular? Because it has the highest slopes of any resort in this part of the alpine region. The altitude of the village stands at 1,850 metres and the highest ski lift is 3,456 metres. There's also ski-in/ski-out lodging for ease of access on the pistes, which is becoming one of the more common choices for those who love going on snowsports holidays. Most of the runs in this area are between 2,300 metres and 2,900 metres, meaning there's plenty of advanced runs if you're adept at handling more difficult conditions.
