In the French Pyrenees the relatively unknown ski resort of Ax les Thermes sits at the gateway to three fantastic ski areas. Surrounded by the mountains of the Ariège region this resort is home to spectacular panoramic views and has amazing sports terrain between 1,400m and 2,400m for all ability levels and disciplines. The snow sports start directly from the town in the Bonascre area where learners and family groups will find loads of slopes to suit them. In the centre of a forest this area is home to lots of gentle slopes, and many services too, like shops, restaurants, and other facilities. The mid-level ski area is Le Saquet between 1,900m and 2,300m and this is the area where freestylers shouldn't miss as it's home to the feature-filled snowpark, along with a good mixture of slopes for skiing and boarding. The third and highest area is Les Campels, there are slopes for all abilities in this area but it's also where the most extreme will find plenty of freeride terrain and loads of powder. As you'd expect this mountainous landscape is also ideal for many other sports and activities. From the Plateau de Beille you'll find 55km of cross-country ski trails to enjoy, which range from 1km in length to 20km. Ice climbing and ski mountaineering are popular sports and there are plenty of guides in town should you wish to try them. And for gentler experiences in the snow you can take one of the sleigh rides, dog sled tours, snowshoe walks, or go for a spin on the ice rink. Traditionally a spa town Ax les Thermes has plenty of attractions apart from its mountain sports. Along with sampling the healing waters in the spas, you can enjoy the shops of the town, relax in the cinema, or try your luck in the casino. And with a range of restaurants and après ski bars evenings in the town can be as lively or quiet as you wish.
