Set amongst the Wilder Kaiser mountains, the pretty ski village of Ellmau has spectacular views of some of Austria's most amazing natural scenery, and is ideally placed in one of Austria's biggest connected ski areas. The Ski Welt area has 279km of marked slopes over varied terrain and is fantastic for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. If you're completely new to snow sports the ski schools and beginners areas are perfect for learning to ski or board, intermediates will find loads of terrain for them in the ski areas, and experts have plenty of challenging mogulled slopes and vast powder-filled off-piste areas. Ellmau's ski area, the Astberg, is quite small but has some good slopes and amazing views. And just a short ride on the Hartkaiser will take you into the vast Ski Welt area.Not just focused on traditional downhill skiing and snowboarding, the Ski Welt area also has 170km of cross-country ski trails, over 300km of winter hiking paths, and the largest night skiing area in Austria. Freestlying is well catered for too with four feature-filled snowparks across the area, including Ski Welt's first floodlit snowpark - the Wintergarten Snowpark.As Ellmau is an attractive traditional village it makes an ideal base for anyone who wants to enjoy all of the Ski Welt area. There are plenty of shops and services, and good quality restaurants and cafes in the village centre. Ellmau's also home to a huge leisure centre where you can splash about in the swimming pools, fly down the water slides, work out on the tennis courts, or escape and relax in the saunas, steam baths, jacuzzis, and other spa facilities. The après ski in the village is pretty good too, the friendly relaxed atmosphere fills the pubs and bars, and the town is lively until late.
